Since this photo was taken the fourth of eight bowstring roof trusses has been erected at the new University Field House adjacent to the West Gym. The 156,000 square-foot building, which will be as tall as a six-story building, is scheduled for completion during the 2003-04 academic year. (Photography by Evangelos Dousmanis)
Union addition to open in mid-March
The anticipated opening date of the University Union addition is now slated for March 15.

“We hoped to have the building open by the beginning of the spring semester, but we may have been a little too ambitious about completing all the work needed to get ready for occupancy,” said Larry Roma, associate vice president for facilities management.

Work crews are installing kitchen equipment for the new food court, coordinating testing and training of the equipment and completing other tasks necessary to get the building into “move in” condition. Roma said that 98 percent of the necessary work has been completed. Special millwork to be installed in the food store, video store and second floor retail area is on order and will take two to three weeks to install. The storage-locker area for student groups has been designed and materials have been purchased. That work will be completed by mid-February. In the meantime, coordination planning for groups moving into the building is proceeding.

The building was finished well ahead of the scheduled June completion.

Elsewhere on campus, construction of the Field House is progressing. The fourth 187-foot bowstring roof truss was installed last week. Interior infrastructure work on plumbing, heating, ventilation and electrical work is proceeding, and some exterior brickwork has begun. The 156,000-square-foot project is scheduled for completion during the 2003-04 academic year.
In other projects:
Groundbreaking for the first of two five-story residence halls is anticipated in late March or early April. The buildings will be located between the College-in-the-Woods and Hinman College. The buildings, part of the first phase of a multi-building complex, will house 608 students.
Library renovation has been completed on the fourth floor and is shifting back to the second floor. The refurbished fourth floor opened January 16. Workers will now gut and rebuild the second floor with new floors, ceilings, lighting, bathrooms and eight group study rooms.
Expansion of the Art Gallery continues in the Fine Arts building. Work is expected to wrap up there by the end of March.
The Physical Facilities addition will be fully enclosed by the end of this month. Masons should complete all brick work by the beginning of February. The metal panel siding is being manufactured and installation will begin around mid-February when windows will be installed. Electrical and mechanical work will continue inside the building. The contractor, who is responsible for completing the shell and the mechanical and electrical work, will finish by March. Physical Facilities crews and a second contractor are scheduled to finish the interior by December.
