Former NOW president DeCrow to address Forum

Why is it that when a man and a woman go to dinner, the man generally pays the bill, no matter which of them earns more money? And why do stereotypes still exist that girls aren’t good at math and all boys are strong, tall, brave, athletic and non-emotional?

Karen DeCrow, former president of the National Organization for Women and nationally recognized author and attorney specializing in Constitutional law, gender and age discrimination and civil liberties, will address these questions in her talk to the Harpur Forum Wednesday, March 26, at the Binghamton Club in downtown Binghamton. DeCrow believes the feminist movement is the most important change to have taken place in the 20th century and her talk, “The Changing Roles of Men and Women,” will build on that theme. The breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. and DeCrow will begin speaking at about 8 a.m.

DeCrow was president of NOW from 1974 to 1977, advocating for paid maternity leave, federally mandated childcare facilities, tax deductions for childcare expenses for working parents, elimination of sex discrimination in academic admissions and equal job training for women on welfare and in poverty programs. DeCrow also served on the board of NOW from 1968 until assuming its presidency. In 1988 she co-founded World Woman Watch, which urges the United States government to advocate for feminism abroad.

Author of several books, including the Young Woman’s Guide to Liberation, Sexist Justice and Women Who Marry Houses: Panic and Protest in Agoraphobia, DeCrow is finishing two new books tentatively titled Tales of a Feminist Lawyer and Ending Power Gridlock.

DeCrow has also had articles and columns appear in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, USA Today and many other national publications. She writes a regular column for the Syracuse New Times.

The Harpur Forum serves business, professional and community leaders by bringing nationally known authorities to speak at Forum functions throughout the year.

Limited seating is available on a first come, first-served basis at a cost of $10 for faculty and staff and $5 for students. Call Elena Backlund at 777-4390 for reservations.
