Food court, offices open in University Union addition

A number of student groups, campus offices and a new food court opened for business in the new University Union this week.

Work crews finished installing the last of the kitchen equipment for the food court and completed other move in tasks during spring break.

“We had hoped to have the building open by the beginning of the spring semester, but we may have been a little too ambitious about completing all the work necessary for occupancy,” said Larry Roma, associate vice president for facilities management. “We’re still ahead of the game,” he added, noting that the contract called for the building to be turned over to the campus by in June.

Only a few student groups, including the Pipe Dream and WHRW, will not move into their space until the end of the semester. The bookstore will also not move until summer.

The 97,452-square-foot addition was designed by New York City architectural firm Hom & Goldman and was constructed by Welliver McGuire Inc. of Elmira. Groundbreaking for the $19.4 million building occurred in February 1999.
