Groundbreaking for two five-story residential halls on a site between Hinman College and College-in-the-Woods will begin Monday, March 11.

Initial work by Sarkisian Bros. Inc. will involve fencing the work site and setting up trailers. For the next several weeks the contractor will begin clearing brush and trees. Erosion control work will start in April followed by work on foundations and a retaining wall through June.

As part of the project, contractors will also make improvements to Lake Lieberman near Newing College, increasing its capacity to handle storm water run-off. Soil samples near the lake were taken earlier this week.

The two residence halls will house 608 students in four-and six-person suites. In addition to the residence halls, work will include parking lots and recreation fields. Work is scheduled to be completed in time for the fall 2003 semester.

The first phase of the project will cost $30 million and is being funded through the state Dormitory Authority. Once additional funds are secured, plans call for building two four-story residential halls and a collegiate center and dining hall. The campus is in the process of hiring a consultant to begin planning the collegiate center.

Since there will be no dining facilities for the two new residence halls, students living there will eat at Hinman Dining Hall which will undergo a major renovation. Hinman is scheduled to close in December and reopen at the start of the fall 2003 semester. During renovations, Hinman students will use the University Union mini mall.
