Miles is using the mechanical structure of the ear of a fly to design what will be the world's smallest directional microphone for use in hearing aids. April 14, 2002 Dancer Bill T. Jones tells The Buffalo News that he got started dancing when he was "dragged" to his first dance class while a student at Binghamton University. "There were two dynamic teachers who made up the dance department," he remembers. "Although they were by no means ideal, they were just professional enough and just inspiratioinal enough to whet my appetite." |

March 13, 2002 A study conducted by Wendy Martinek, assistant professor of political science, and the Constitution Project at Georgetown University on the length of time it takes to bring a federal judicial nomination to closure and the partisanship involved was highlighted in the Washington Post. The article noted that the study affirms the ongoing problem of lengthy delays. March-April 2002 Binghamton University was among the nonprofit institutions featured in an article about unusual gifts. The University had received a donation of suture thread that was no longer sterile. While such a gift would be considered worthless by most, Laura Terriquez-Kasey, a nursing faculty nmember, accepted it so that students could use it to practice suturing. Since the students typically practice on pigs' knuckles or pigs' legs, it does not matter that the material was not considered fit for use on humans. ![]() April 19, 2002 Dara Picciano, a social worker in the Binghamton University Counseling Center, talked about how people absorb a tragic loss in an article on the Oklahoma City bombing seven years ago. |

April 14, 2002 April 21, 2002 Immanuel Wallerstein, distinguished professor emeritus director of the Fernand Braudel Center, wrote an op-ed piece for the Los Angeles Times about the Bush Administration's policy toward Iraq and the chances of an invasion. the article was headlined "Iraq War: The Coming Disaster." ![]() The Baltimore Sun April 17, 2002 April 22, 2002 BU men's lacrosse coach Ed Stephenson talks about his coaching experiences with lacrosse and Division I competition. Stephenson helped start the program at BU, which the newspaper calls "one of the jewels of the extensive State University of New York system. In Inside Lacrosse, Stephenson talked about the trials of launching a new program. ![]() Spring 2002 BU President Lois B. DeFleur was among the presidents featured in an article on women leading three of the four SUNY University Centers. DeFleur, who took office in 1990, is the longest serving president of the three. The article reviewed her accomplishments as well as those of Karen Hitchcock, president of SUNY Albany and Shirley Strum Kennny, president of SUNY Stony Brook. Financial Times April 19, 2002 An international seminar hosted by Binghamton University on globalization and civilization was featured in an article in the Financial Times. The conference drew well-known thinkers from a variety of disciplines and hailing from Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States to ponder the question: Is globalization the same as a dialogue between civilizations? The conference was organized by the Institute of Global Cultural Studies, directed by Ali Mazrui, Schweitzer Chair. |
